Celebrating 125 Years of Service
Five Acres, a pioneer in providing successful solutions that ensure safety, well-being and permanent homes for children and their families proudly celebrates 125 years of service. Throughout its history, Five Acres has provided programs that have a measurable impact. Nearly 5,500 children, members of their families and support networks are currently served each year. Since 1888, Five Acres has touched the lives of nearly 100,000 children and families.
Five Acres, formerly known as The Boys’ and Girls’ Aid Society of Los Angeles was incorporated on March 12, 1888. Seven visionary citizens responded to the plight of homeless children by creating one of the first orphanages on the west coast at 2150 Glowner Street in Los Angeles. The founding directors included Los Angeles Mayor William H. Workman, William Lacy and Mrs. Helen Watson, who served as the volunteer superintendent for the first 11 years.
In 1921, Five Acres of land in Altadena was obtained for further expansion. Noted architect Myron Hunt was retained to design the child-oriented facility and in 1926 the new campus was built entirely by individual contributions.
Over the years, Five Acres evolved from an agency offering care to children lacking permanent support systems to a social services agency offering treatment services to children and their families with varying needs.
“Over the last 125 years much has changed in the field of human services but one thing has remained consistent throughout Five Acres’ history – its commitment to ensuring children have safe, loving and permanent family homes. We have continued to provide effective programs that have a measurable impact on children and families in crisis. We will continue providing quality care, effective programming and research driven results and we invite the community to join us on this journey,” said Chanel Boutakidis, Five Acres Chief Executive Officer.
To mark 125 years of service, Five Acres launched its anniversary campaign to increase its Permanency Fund – ensuring the agency’s ability to continue providing effective programs and critical care to children and families in crisis despite future economic challenges. The goal is to raise $200,000 for the fund this year and each following year in addition to the more than $2 million in cash and in-kind support that the agency already raises annually in support of its vital programs.
Several major events will take place in 2013 to celebrate Five Acres’ 125th anniversary, including: the Anniversary Celebration on March 16th; Five Acres 10th Annual Swingin’ On a Star Gala on May 18th; the Invitational Golf Classic on September 23rd, culminating with the Holiday Open House on December 5th.
