Five Acres is committed to training tomorrow’s mental health professionals. We are an MSW Internship site for USC, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State L.A. and UCLA and provide MFT trainee opportunities for students receiving their master’s degrees from Phillips Graduate Institute and Pacific Oaks University.

Field placements for interns/trainees in all Five Acres' programs are coordinated by our affiliate Pasadena Mental Health Center or PMHC.  PMHC affiliated with Five Acres in 2007 enhancing our array of services, young couple in session with therapistwhich included residential care and education, mental health services in homes and schools, foster care and adoption, and domestic violence prevention and opening a wider range of opportunities for clinicians-in-training.


The intern program has grown since 1999, when PMHC began providing intern training, from four interns representing three local universities to 33 interns from 11 different university programs.  When PMHC began providing intern training it expanded its tradition of training and established a clinical intern-training program to provide succeeding generations of therapists with practical experience in the counseling field. Our clinical training program includes:

Community-based Services

Community-based Services provides counseling to children and families in their schools, homes and other community settings in Pasadena, Monrovia, an El Monte school districts. This program works from a social work model of service delivery by promoting an understanding of families within the context of their environment.
Services are provided in the home and community, therefore, travel is required. Applicants for this program should have a high level of comfort or experience working out in the community.  Department of Mental Health documentation experience is also provided.  Six to eight students are accepted per year with priority given to English-Spanish bilingual applicants.

Grace Center
Grace Center provides domestic violence prevention and survivor services including crisis intervention, legal advocacy, case management, support and parenting groups and violence education programs.

Graduate students will conduct assessments and provide counseling to individuals and families struggling with issues related to domestic violence. Therapy can occur in the community and/or in the client’s home.  Travel is required and students will be working with a wide range of mental health and social services.  Four to six placements are offered per year. 

Youth Accountability Program

Youth Accountability Program provides delinquency prevention/diversion to Pasadena youth who have committed a minor first offense such as truancy, shoplifting, or possession of a controlled substance. In partnership with the Pasadena Police Department’s Youth Advisory Board, the program serves 72 youth per year, each of who makes a six month commitment. 
Trainees/interns provide individual and/or group counseling for youth, and conduct group parenting session with their families.  Additional cases from the Center’s population round out the intern’s caseload.  This program accepts up to eight students per year.

Therapeutic Behavioral Services is a short-term, intensive intervention that is included as one component of a comprehensive mental health service plan.

TBS provides one-to-one support for children experiencing a life crisis or when a life crisis is imminent, who need additional support to transition from a higher to a lower level of care or to prevent movement to a higher level of care.  Positions available at Five Acres in the Pasadena office on Lincoln Av. Six-Nine students will be accepted this year.
